EMERGENCY EYE WASH STATION – WHAT THEY ARE & HOW THEY WORK

An eyewash station consists of a catch basin  with two water nozzles to allow for both eyes to be rinsed simultaneously. The system is usually activated by a lever or a pedal and is equipped with a valve that allows water to run continuously until it is turned off. This ensures the unit will not shut off prematurely and allows the injured worker to use both hands to keep the eyelids open.

Most eyewash stations are directly connected to the water system in the workplace. However, there are other approved self-contained eyewash units that are gravity-fed or pressurized. These eyewashes are useful in work areas where there is no plumbing. The eyewashes are acceptable only if their tanks are large enough to meet the ANSI standard of at least 15 minutes or longer flushing time, depending on the chemical being flushed.

We probably all know how annoying and irritating eye discomfort can be, but many of us neglect to give our eyes the right care and attention sometimes.

When you feel your eye is irritated, your initial impulse may be to rub it, hoping the initial pain or irritation will go away.

However, this action could cause physical damage, as it could simply rub in the irritant and scratch your eye.

One easy, straightforward solution that can help eye discomfort, is to use an eyewash. So, here we’re going to look at the benefits of an eyewash and explain who might benefit from using it and when.

The standard references other kinds of eyewashes that do not meet the above criteria, but can be used to supplement approved eyewash stations. One example is a hand-held squeeze bottle called a personal eyewash. This is used to provide immediate flushing to support plumbed and self-contained equipment, but must NOT be used to replace them. The flushing fluid used in self-contained units and personal eyewash bottles must meet and be maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The benefits of eye wash

There can be multiple irritants that your eyes can be exposed to throughout the day, such as dust, grit and pollutants.

Eyewashes are available to soothe and cleanse irritable eyes and are available to use on a daily basis.

The eye wash provides a simple treatment for a problem which is usually suitable for both adults and children, although you should always check the instructions before using an eyewash.

Who can use eye wash?

Eye wash may be used by almost anyone if the situation demands it, and it can ease discomfort caused by contact lens wear, manual work and environmental factors, amongst others.

Eye wash can help ease the symptoms of various forms of discomfort, like tired or irritated eyes.

Modern living (such as computer work and air conditioning), dust particles, pollen, grit, and smoke can damage the eyes’ surface, leaving eyes feeling tired, uncomfortable and irritated.

With this in mind, eye wash can benefit a wide array of people.

Indeed, the NHS proposes including eyewash and an eye bath in your basic first aid kit. So, if any of these symptoms sound particularly familiar to you, you might want to start taking a little more care of your eyes.
