An orrery is a mechanical model of the Solar System that illustrates or predicts the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons, usually according to the heliocentric model.

Creating a model of the Earth-Moon system is one way to accurately represent the scale size of Earth and the Moon, as well as the distance between them.

How does Sun Earth and Moon work together?

Interaction of Earth, Moon, & Sun

The moon orbits the earth once per month, and the earth orbits the sun once per year. This happens because all bodies with mass in the universe attract each other. The earth’s pull on the moon keeps the moon in orbit, and the sun’s pull on the earth keeps the earth in orbit.

Earth system models can help understand and provide critical information on water availability, drought, climate and temperature extremes, ice sheets and sea levels, and land-use change. They help scientists understand how plants, people, animals, and microbes all contribute to and are affected by the Earth’s climate.

The Moon makes a complete orbit around Earth in 27 Earth days and rotates or spins at that same rate, or in that same amount of time. Because Earth is moving as well – rotating on its axis as it orbits the Sun – from our perspective, the Moon appears to orbit us every 29 days.

What are the four main components of the Earth system model?

Everything in Earth’s system can be placed into one of four major subsystems: land, water, living things, or air. These four subsystems are called “spheres.” Specifically, they are the “lithosphere” (land), “hydrosphere” (water), “biosphere” (living things), and “atmosphere”
